Dr. Heffernan graduated with high honors from Pennsylvania State University.  After completing medical school at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, he went on to the University of Massachusetts for his residency training.  He has received awards from the University of Pittsburgh and the Orthopaedic Research Education Foundation for his research which has been presented at national meetings.

He was fellowship trained in pediatric orthopaedic and scoliosis surgery at Children's Hospital Los Angeles focusing on surgical spinal fusion, growth-friendly treatments for early onset scoliosis, Mehta casting techniques, and congential scoliosis as well as treatments for cerebral palsy, fractures, hip and foot disorders.

He performs all aspects of pediatric orthopaedic surgery and sees patients at Children's Hospital New Orleans as well as in Lafayette and Lake Charles.
