The South Louisiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC) program administered out of the Office 
of Medical Education has been awarded a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) grant for 5 years totaling more than $1 million dollars.
Since 1989, the South Louisiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC) program develops and enhances education and training networks within communities, academic institutions, and community-based organizations. AHEC has developed programs that consist of interdisciplinary community based, primary care training programs wherein academic and community are engaged to improve the distribution, diversity, supply, and quality of health professionals. Particular emphasis centers on improving the creation of primary care health professionals in under served and rural health areas of Louisiana.
