DEPARTMENT HEAD OF ORTHOPAEDICS - SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
Dr. Zura, a native of Baltimore, is a graduate of UVA and Johns Hopkins; he returned to UVA for his residency training and then moved to the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for an orthopedic trauma fellowship. He has been on the faculty at Duke since 2004 and has been in a variety of roles there that translate readily to our environment; he has been fellowship director and section head for orthopedic trauma. He has been a member of the departmental education and finance committees and a member of the institutional trauma peer-review committee.
Dr. Zura was tempted by another LSU recruitment effort years ago, initiated by former Department Head, Dr. Robert D’Ambrosia; he declined that opportunity but is proud that he will be carrying the title of the Endowed Chair in Dr. D’Ambrosia’s name.
This recruitment was a partnership effort with our colleagues at LCMC. We are grateful for the considerable support that LCMC and UMC have offered us collectively as we work together to strengthen and expand our educational, research, and clinical musculoskeletal programs.
Finally, we are grateful to Dr. Andy King, who has served as Department Head since 2007; he stepped into that role during a period of transition for the school, as we continued our recovery from Hurricane Katrina. If you have the opportunity to do so, please thank Dr. King for his leadership over the years and his support (and help) during the recruitment of his successor.
